Professor Haifa Takruri-Rizk MBE, BSc, MSc, PhD, MIEE, MBCS, ILTM, MWES

In addition to her technical research, Professor Takruri-Rizk is especially interested in gender and inequality and is involved with a number of projects that aim to analyse and assess these inequalities. For the last few years, Haifa has successfully led a number of ESF partially funded projects. They are:

2005-2006 Developing Female Engineers
www.cse.salford.ac.uk/dfe

The research team behind 'Developing Female Engineers' aimed to uncover good work practices, codes of conduct, and company schemes that all encourage women’s entrance into engineering degrees, careers, and retention.

2006-2007 Women in North West Engineering
www.cse.salford.ac.uk/wewin

The team have examined, analysed and evaluated working practices and occupational cultures in engineering organisations in the North West. They have recommended policies and strategies to influence and improve the working practices of companies in the sector.

2007 Women Audio Video Engineers
www.cse.salford.ac.uk/wave

Despite being free from the traditional 'heavy machinery' stereotype of engineering, the audio engineering and visual technology industries remain male-dominated. The team will examine gender segregation in this industry and produce policy recommendations and practical strategies to influence the effective recruitment and participation of women in this high-growth sector.

Haifa is also involved in other projects that aim to address gender and social inequalities. Haifa is managing the University of Salford's share in the Jive north West Hub for Women in Science, Engineering, Construction, and Technology (SECT) — the regional partner of the Jive: Joining Policy — Joining Practice national initiative. To find out more about the work and activities of the Jive North West Hub, please contact the Project Co-ordinator, Marie Shaw (m.shaw@salford.ac.uk) on +44 (0)161 295 5117. Alternatively, you can visit the website by clicking on the link in the navigation bar on the left.

Haifa is also the Co-Project Manager of the BME Participation in SET research project. The Project Manager for this project is Dr Kate Booth (k.m.booth@salford.ac.uk). This project focuses on improvng participation (progression, retention, attainment and employment) of BMEs in SET studies and careers in Northwest region, and the aim is to conduct research that will inform policy recommendations. To find out more about this project, visit their website.

The Jive North West Hub would like to invite you to the opening of the 'Women in SECT Exhibition'. This event takes place on Friday 9th March, in the Museum of Science & Industry, Manchester. For more information and to register for this event, please click on the 'Exhibition' link.

Haifa is the Project Co-ordinator for the INSIGHT programme here at the University of Salford. Insight offers young women the opportunity to experience engineering in higher education. The week long residential programme is sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineers, Headstart, and the University of Salford. To find out more, please visit the website.
