Why Salford

Salford has a long history of teaching Mechanical Engineering going back to the establishment of the Salford Royal Technical College in 1896, which became the University of Salford in 1967. From its beginnings in the late 1800s, Salford has taught Mechanical Engineering at Bachelors, Masters and PhD levels, and, hence, has a wealth of experience. Salford has a long standing reputation for the quality of its teaching. In a recently published paper in the journal Quality in Higher Education and reported in the Times Higher Education Supplement, Salford ranks 9th for the quality of its teaching.

Another important aspect of any Mechanical Engineering course is access to good laboratory facilities. At Salford, we have extensive and well equipped engineering laboratories which include facilities for: i) Design & manufacturing; ii) Structural engineering & materials testing; iii) Thermodynamics & combustion engines; iv) Fluid dynamics & aerodynamics (sub-sonic and super-sonic); v) Dynamics & machine systems; vi) Control, robotics & automation.

Our Mechanical Engineering courses are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (http://www.imeche.org.uk/), which means that they fulfil the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Achieving CEng status will be an important step in achieving your ambitions in an exciting and rewarding career.

Finally, it is important that you enjoy the social and leisure aspects of being at university. In this respect, Salford is ideally placed being close to the centre of Manchester.
