The University of Salford has a 30-year history of acoustics research. The Centre's principle areas of research include building and architectural acoustics; environmental acoustics; outdoor sound propagation; remote acoustic sensing of meteorological conditions; subjective response, especially for room acoustics and audio systems; digital signal processing; transducer design; and active control. The Centre has a portfolio of fundamental and applied research projects funded by research councils, government bodies, and industry. Salford is also one of only two UK universities that provide acoustics training at degree, masters and doctoral level.

Consultancy and commercial work with the acoustics industry are also very important areas of the Centre's work. The expertise of the staff and facilities of the Centre are applied to real life scenarios, with the result that industry and commerce benefit from this experience and the University's courses are kept up to date with the current industrial practice. In addition, these commercial activities attract funding which supports undergraduate and postgraduate ventures.

The Centre has UKAS accredited testing facilities that can make acoustic and audio measurements to national and international standards and provide a valuable service to industry and commerce.

The Centre works closely with industry via a consultancy service and covers a wide range of activities, it operates the UK's premier test laboratory for hearing protectors, serving an international group of industrial customers; has recently launched the calibration laboratory for acoustics' instrumentation; and also carries out thermal testing.
