The Engineering Research Centre brings together a wealth of expertise and international reputation in three focussed subject areas.  Research at the centre is well funded, with support from EPSRC, TSB, DoH, MoD, Royal Society, European Commission, as well as excellent links with and direct funding from industry. Our research excellence means that we have not only the highest calibre academics but also the first class facilities to support the leading edge research projects for both post-graduate studies and post-doctoral research.

Research at the centre is organised into the following strategic areas:

CASE Control and Intelligent Systems

CASE Control and Intelligent Systems is an international leader in the advancement of automatic control, artificial intelligence and systems engineering and is also specialised in applying advanced technologies to solve real world problems. The research focuses are:

Civil Engineering Group

The Civil Engineering Group carries out leading edge research in structural engineering, transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering and hydraulics.

  • Structural Engineering
  • Transport Studies

Rail Research Group

The Rail Research Group at the University of Salford is multi-disciplinary in nature and carries out leading research in a wide range of strategic areas.  These include vehicle dynamics and control, condition monitoring, train operation optimisation, environmental acoustics and vibration, civil/structural engineering with particular reference to masonry arch bridges, and transport policy and franchising.

Spray Research Group

The Spray Research Group is specialised in the production of sprays, atomiser design and turbulent spray structures. The group has a wide variety of experience in applying experimental and computational modelling techniques, utilising state of the art facilities to fundamental and industrial and commercial applications.

  • Spray Research
  • Petroleum Technology

Other research

The centre has also first class expertise in research related to aeronautical/aerospace technology

  • Applied aerodynamic and flight dynamics
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics
