Spray Research Group

Facilities

The SRG has modern laser based instrumentation for the investigation of liquid sprays and fluid flows. These include:

Phase Doppler Anemometer (measurement of droplet size and velocity, and fluid velocity and turbulence), Malvern Mastersizer (benchmark instrument for spray characterisation), High speed video systems (capturing images of processes in spray systems), Pulse photonics (Image grabbing techniques) as well as range of high resolution camera systems.

The group has an advanced Wabeco Micro-Machining CNC multi-axis miller and lathe for the manufacture of various test atomizers and for their modification. A number of software packages are utilised by the Group for the modelling and manufacture of components. Example of these packages is: CFx, FE, CAD, solid modelling, etc. The laboratory is also equipped with various flow control and measurement rigs and dedicated chambers for the analysis of sprays and fluid flows and bespoke patternation rigs.

Special apparatus has been developed for investigating different sprays and processes, as highlighted before.
