Climate for Change Survey
The UK Government-funded Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (UKRC) in collaboration with engineering staffing specialist EPCglobal is conducting a short survey of 1,000’s of SET professionals to coincide with the 3rd annual UKRC conference on 14th March 2007, entitled ‘Climate for Change.’
The online survey (open from 8th March to 11th March) takes five minutes to complete and will allow SET professionals worldwide to deliver verdicts on humanity’s prospects, some of the proposed ways to minimise climate change and also on the role of women. (This survey is not an academic exercise: It is hoped the results will deliver clear and compelling majority verdicts on a select number of issues which will become points of discussion for conference delegates and when distributed, to the SET community and policymakers more widely.)
The results will be announced at the conference, which senior UK Government policymakers and industry captains will attend. The conference occurs in UK National Science and Engineering Week which for the second year in a row has climate change and the environment as its main theme.
The survey is anonymous, although you are free to leave your details at the end to be emailed the results. Please find a link to the survey here: http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?p=WEB2268PQ9Y7W7

Dissemination Event at the Museum of Science & Industry
The Women in North West Engineering (WEWIN) team have spent the last 12 months attempting to evaluate working practices and occupational culture in engineering organisations across the North West by comparing and contrasting the experiences of men and women in the industry. The team explored the explanations for the persistence of occupational segregation and also recognised that there are a multitude of ways in which these barriers can, and have been overcome.
The project is now in the conclusion stage, and as such, the team will be hosting a dissemination event on the 5th December, 2006 at the Museum of Science and Industry. The day long event will include two keynote speakers: Marie-Noëlle Barton MBE, and Professor Barbara Bagilhole, key findings from the WEWIN project, discussion workshops on a variety of themes, and the opportunity for delegates to take advantage of the facilities at the museum. To register for this event, please visit the Dissemination Conference webpage.

The IET Launches the search for Britain's Best Young Female Engineer
The Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award is the most prestigious honour of its kind in the UK. With only eight per cent of the UK's engineers being women, the judges are not only looking for candidates with exceptional skills, but also those that have the ability to be a great ambassador for the profession, and a role model for the next generation of engineers.
The awards are open to women, under the age of 30, with an appropriate engineering qualification such as a HNC, HND, or a degree. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate their practical experience, which is considered of equal value to academic achievement.
The winner of the Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award will receive a cheque for £1000, and an engraved trophy, at a ceremony in London on the 25th January 2007. The runner-up will receive the Women's Engineering Society (WES) prize of £500. In addition to this, The Mary George Memorial Prize will be presented to a candidate who has completed her academic studies, but has yet to obtain sufficient training and experience to enable her to qualify for the main award.
The Awards are supported by BT, Cosmopolitan Magazine, The James Dyson Foundation, and Ford. The closing date for the awards is the 15th September 2006. For further information, please visit: http://www.youngwomanengineer.org.

Calling all North West Engineers
The research project - Women in North West Engineering will conduct an extensive research and field study to reveal whether working practices and organisational cultures in the engineering industry represent a major barrier for the recruitment, progression and retention of female engineers.
We want to gather extensive information about working practices and organisational cultures and the way in which these cultures and practices influence professional female engineers. We will analyse the findings of the studies conducted and compare the results to existing and national data where available.
We would like to invite engineers from the North West - both men and women - to complete our questionnaire, which is the first stage in the data collection process. The questionnaire will only take approximately 20 minutes to complete and the information that you give will be treated confidentially and will remain anonymous. If you want to receive a copy (or copies to distribute within your company) of this questionnaire, please contact the WEWIN team (wewin-cse@salford.ac.uk) giving your name and address details. Alternatively, you can complete the questionnaire online. Please visit our questionnaires page for further details.
We have also developed a separate questionnaire for engineers in the North West who have a managerial or directorial role within their company. To view this questionnaire instead, please visit our questionnaires page and follow the links to the Managing Directors or Human Resource questionnaire. You can also obtain paper copies of this questionnaire by contacting the wewin-cse@salford.ac.uk and giving your name and job title and the postal address of your company.
For further information on this research, please telephone the team on 0161
295 4983, or email wewin-cse@salford.ac.uk.
